Joint Pre Xmas party for SK Pendidikan Khas, Kota Samarahan 8th Nov 08

Lions Club of Kuching City and SMK St Teresa's Leo club jointly carried out this Pre-Xmas party for 25 boarders at SK Pendidikan Khas, Kota Samarahan on Saturday morning. According to Guru Besar, Puan Lily Then, there are about 85 boarders in the school but most of them have gone home for the weekend. These children come from all parts of Sarawak and some of them only return to their homes three times a year during the school holidays. There are over 30 teachers in this special school for the deaf as classes are small. Ratio about 1 teacher :5 children. Children here attend 8 years of schooling from 7 yrs - 14 yrs old. They use the same syllabus as the normal schools except they are given extra two years to complete their primary education.

Lions Club of Kuching City had been coming back to this school every year to celebrate various ocassions with these special children. Over the years we have celebrated Mid Autumn festivals, buka puasa with them and this year we gave them an early Christmas party as it is near to the end of the school term. For the last few years, KFC had graciously donated food and drinks towards the party and likewise this year they did the same. We are really grateful to them for their ever willing contribution towards making these children happy.

This 7 year old boy initially went home the night before. He cried at home and insisted that his parents brought him back for the party on Saturday so that he can join in the fun and games!

Being Free from Conflict

As it takes two hands to clap, so it takes two to have conflict. Therefore, finally, I must accept that I am at least partly responsible for the conflict, whether intentionally, or otherwise. Introspection is required to check in which way I can change or adjust. Secondly, the fire of conflict is most easily put out with the coolness of love and respect. Respect means to remain focused on the good qualities of others. Thirdly we should never become trapped in negative emotions such as anger or depression. To speck or act based on such negative emotions is to consolidate these feelings and worsen the conflict. Again, it is astonishing to see how conflict arises because of lack of communication. Clear, honest and non-confrontational communication ahead of time resolves issues before they become issues. Relationship is a big problem today. Where ever there are judgements, expectations or suspicions’, wherever there is a hint of inferiority or superiority, relationships suffer. The conflict drags on. Let me develop that humility to take the first step towards peace. Reform the attitudes which prevent me from making peace.

14th Induction and Installation of Kolej DPAH Abdillah Leo Club 28th Oct 08

Leo Club of Kolej DPAH Abdillah was formed in 1994 under the guidance of the late Past President Teresa Sim until her untimely demise in 2007. This Leo Club had won numerous awards in the past for their activeness and contribution to society. In this fiscal year, Lions Club of Kuching City, being their sponsoring club decided that these Leos deserved the support to be active again. PP Sheila Adenan took the initiative to contact the Leo members and organised this 14th installation and induction at the college.

Ten Lion members (out of which 8 were past presidents) from the club, lead by President Alex Low, showed up to give their strong support and encouragement to the Leos. DC Leo Chong Nam Fah inducted the new members and DG Sim Boon Chuan installed the President and his Board of Directors to their office. Present also to support were the college's Pergetua Kanan Puan Zohara Zen and their faculty advisor, Puan Marlinda bt Abdul Razak. Region Chairman Chua Boon Kuan and DC Membership Cecil Adenan were also amongst those present. On a passing thought, the late PP Teresa Sim would be so proud to see so many Lions in the college this afternoon to support her "baby" and we are sure she is smiling down at us now.
