Grow with the Handicap is an activity of the Catholic church. Our club is privileged to work together with the church to organise a Christmas party for these special friends. This is the second year that we celebrate with them. During the party, PP Dora Lam and family gave away a wheelchair to one of the special guest.

HOPE Charity Sales 6th November 2011

Seven members were at the stall to raise fund for the Home of Peace. Together, they sold chai kueh (donated by President Vincent), Chicken Pies (donated by PP Juriah), Banana muffins, toilet rolls holders and girls support garments (donated by PP Sheila Kho), Treasurer Irene supplied the plastic bags and some well wishers donated batteries,DVD and herbal tea. They raised RM1,077.00 in the sales. The members who attended were President Vincent, Treasurer Irene,PP Juriah Sulehan,PP Caroline Sim, PP Teresa Wu, PP Sheila Kho and Lion Andrew Tsen.

Our excellent hosts during our two night stay in Hsinchu, IPP Wang Yi Hsian (in blue) and husband in their lovely home.

Two members of Kuching City( PP Sheila Kho and Treasurer Irene Tan)and PDG Mary Law visited our twinned district 300-G1 from 17th - 19th October 2011. The hospitality from our sisters and brothers in our twinned district were overwhelming. They were excellent hosts and we spent many memorable hours with them.

In Memory of Uncle Mario Tan Meng Hua (1926-2011)

Uncle Tan passed away peacefully in the Home of Peace on the 19th October 2011, aged 86. He is one of the pioneer resident at the Home. Kuching City members celebrated his 86th birthday in March 2011. Uncle Tan will be remembered fondly as being cheerful and always so happy to see us when we visit. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, Uncle Tan.

Charity Golf tournament 2011 @ KGS 9th Oct 2011

Lions Club of Kuching City successfully organised the Charity Golf tournament on the 9th Oct 2011 at Kelab Golf Sarawak. Over 100 golfers took part in the 18 holes competition. District Governor Dr Tan Tsu Kun performed a symbolic tee off to start the tournament, witnessed by Lions dignitaries.

The tournament ended with a lunch for all the participants. Prizes, totally RM9,000.00 were given out to the winners during the prize giving, in addition to numureous lucky draws.

President Vincent Tan, his spouse, treasurer Irene Tan and member Caroline Wee took part in this Region 1 project. The outing involved a hike up from Lion Mike's camp to the Hindu Temple which took about an hour. After a short rest, we proceed to plant 50 trees around the vicinity of the temple. As it coincided with Malaysia Day, Lions and Leos commemorate the occasion by standing at attention, singing the National Anthem whilst Region Chairperson Peter Ong raised the Malaysian Flag. A long string of firecrackers was also let off in celebration. Thereafter everyone walked down the trail back to Lion Mike's Camp for lunch and fellowship. The heavens were kind....it rained after we got back to camp.

A joint project between Lions Club of Kuching City, Singapore Central and Miri Central at an elderly day centre in Serangoon.

OC,Lion Millie Loon lead a group of lions from Singapore Central, Kuching City and Miri Central to visit the elders at the centre.

Lion Millie cooked curry, beehoon, barley soup along with bread, cakes and fruits to share with the old folks.

St Luke’s ElderCare provides a range of day care services to help families take care of their elderly loved ones. Besides social day care, they also provide active rehabilitation and wellness. At present there are around 100 elders in the centre.

Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Sales 13 March 2011

The gloomy sky with endless rain pouring down did not deter these volunteers turning up for a good cause. By 7 am, the place was packed with stall holders and patrons. This is the first year that Lions Club of Kuching City participated in the annual Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity sales, under the leadership of OC and Incoming President Vincent Tan. Our stall sold various food items such as vegetarian Nasi Lemak , vegetarian fried beehoon, vegetarian banana muffins, banana chips, nyonya kueh, vegetarian poh pia, fresh fruits like apples, oranges and bananas and lastly jellies.The support was overwhelming and the club raised around RM1530.

It was heartening to see many patrons coming to the sales with reusable bags and containers with the aim to support the Association's on going activity of recycling and promoting a green environment.

Members who participated were Incoming President Vincent Tan, PP Dora Lam, PP Teresa Wu, Lion Irene Tan and PP Sheila Kho. Lion Alice Kon donated the jellies.

Five members lead by Incoming President Vincent Tan paid a visit to the newly set up Home of Peace at Jalan Landeh, Padawan. The visit was to coincide with the birthday of one of the resident, Mr Tan Meng Hua who would turn 85 years old on the 22nd March 2011.The members brought along a birthday cake which was also shared by Mr Jon Onn and Mdm Elizabeth Lai whose birthday fell on 2 Jan 2011 and 8 Feb 2011 respectively.

A simply lunch was provided by the visiting members who also brought some household items which the Home needed. Time was spent getting to know the seven residents at the Home which is run by the Catholic Church. The Home accepts any destitute elderly folks regardless of religion and race, under the supervision of Sister Flora.

The members who went were PP Dora Lam, PP Annie Ho, PP Ivy Fong, Lion Jessie Ho and PP Sheila Kho. A Friend of Lions and ex member, Regina Yap also came along to support the project.

Mej (R) Abong anak Amping of the Lions Club of Bau, the OC of the function sent a fax to the Club Secretary requesting for the donation of 2 wheel chairs for their members. Upon endorsement and approval from the Board of Directors, Secretary contacted PP Dr Chris Kiyui from the LC of Bau for the suppliers contact. Not only did Dr Chris gave us the suppliers contact, he ordered and delivered the wheel chairs to us. Thanks PP Dr. Chris.

On Saturday evening, 25 September 2010 IPP Caroline Sim and Secretary PP Sheila Adenan attended the handing over of the 2 wheel chairs to Encik Misekin anak Ginbal and Encik Leonard Layam anak Rangga. Encik Misekin’s wife received the wheel chair on his behalf whilst a committee of the ex-Services Association Batu Kawa branch represented Encik Leonard.

The presentation held at Penview Inn Hotel was held in conjunction with “Jasamu Dikenang” Warriors Day Appeal and Fund Raising Dinner.

A joint Lions orientation was held on the 16th Sept 2010 for new and old members alike for Lions Club of Kuching Host and Kuching City. Eight members from Lions Club of Kuching City attended the orientation, lead by President Kelly Lim.The members who attended were Ln Alice Kon,1st VP Robert Bong, Ln Diana Bilikau,Ln Jessie Ho and Ln Irene Tan besides the two district trainers from the club, PP Sheila Adenan and PP Sheila Kho. DT Sheila Adenan spoke on the structure of Lions clubs and how to organise projects and activities and DT Sheila Kho gave an overview on the history of Lions Club International and the District.

President Kelly delivered the opening remarks and President Esther gave the closing remarks during the orientation.

Three Past District Governors namely PDG BC Sim, PDG Mary Wee and PDG Cheng Yik Siong were in attendance to give their support and encouragement to the Lions members present.

The joint orientation ended on a "High Note" with the singing of the Lions song.This is to introduce the song and hands movements to our new members.

EID MUBARAK, commonly known as Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is a joyous time for Muslims around the world as it marks the end of Ramadan. Once again this year the Club has identified 10 underprivileged families to bring cheers to and lessen their burden this festive occasion.

On Saturday, 28 August 2010, the members led by Project Head, PP Sheila Adenan met at Ting & Ting Supermarket to “car pool” and to ferry the goodies in the 2 cars, driven by Lion Vincent Tan and PP Juriah Sulehan. The 2 locations were at Kampung Gita Tengah (2 families), Kampung Gita Laut, Kampung Gita Lama and Kampung Bintawa Ulu (4 families).

On Friday, 3 September 2010, PP Sheila Adenan on her monthly working trip to Roban, stopped by in Saratok to distribute 2 more Raya hampers and “duit raya” to 70+ Encik Bujang bin Tahir and Encik Tahir bin Tar. Since Encik Tahir was not able to meet us, we left the goods in the good hands of Encik Bujang to hand over to him the next morning.

KAA Family Day ( Part 2)

Last Sunday morning saw over 100 excited children and their families arriving at Siar Beach Resort, some buzzing in by bus and others in their own cars. Decorated canopies stood ready to welcome the group who were all looking forward to a day of fun at the Kuching Autistic Association's (KAA) 1st Family Day.

The objective of the family day was to give the teachers, children and their families a day away from their daily routine, allowing them to spend some quality time together. Many activities were carried out throughout the day with full participation from the special children, volunteers and parents alike.

The fun kicked off with entertaining music, much to the delight of the special children from KAA. It was a learning opportunity and enriching experience for the volunteers who all acted as buddies for the day to their assigned special friends.

Mr. Tsai Jee Sem, 60 years old finally underwent a much awaited cataract operation on Friday 7th May 2010. Prior to this, he had failing vision and mature cataract. Thanks to Lions Clubs of Kuching City and Kuching North, Mr. Tsai could see much better now and able to attend to his ailing and bed-ridden wife.

A father of three sons, he used to work as a plasterer till three years ago. He has lost contact with this two sons who have left for Kuala Lumpur to work. He now lives with a son who works as a technician at a computer firm.

Present to meet in person a very grateful Mr. Tsai after the operation on 8th May 2010 were PP Teresa Wu, PP Dora Lam and PP Sheila Adenan (KuchingCity), President Alexander Lao, PP Dr. Chan Tiang Ho, Lion Victor Ng (Kuching North), PP Cecil Adenan (Kuching Allamanda) and eye specialist himself, Dr Stephen Wong at Dr. Stephen Wong's Eye Clinic & Surgery.

The Open Day Sales 2010 of the Sarawak Association for the Welfare of Intellectually Disabled Children (aka PERKATA Sarawak Special School) was held at its premises at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee on Sunday 2nd May 2010. The early morning cool air on the fine Sunday morning which led to a drizzle and culminating with light rain did not hamper the spirit of the Club members to raise RM571.00 for a good cause. The members sold their specialty, " Juriah's Nasi Lemak" which was cooked by non other than PP Juriah herself. The Club also helped sell tickets worth RM300.00.

The stall was manned by PP Sheila Adenan, PP Dora Lam, PP Juriah Sulehan, President Elect Kelly Lim and Lion Kristie Lok. PP Cecil Adenan from Kuching Allamanda and Lion Friend Mrs Chua Pei Ning also lent a helping hand.

This boarding school is located in the Padawan area and about one hour by car from 10th mile, Padawan bazaar, through steep hills and sometimes damaged road. Besides distributing deworming tablets, the clubs also gave sets of tooth brush/paste and soaps.President Caroline donated used books for their library and PP Sheila Kho donated rulers, pencil cases, toys and a Lion Head.

Human beings always act in ways to preserve their ego, using various self-defense mechanisms. When self-respect is intact, there is no need to guard it. This positive state of awareness exists naturally.

A person who is without food and shelter will find it difficult to maintain self-respect. However, even if physical needs are met, something more is required to satisfy self-esteem needs. Ultimately, when the individual is satisfied in the mind, there is self-respect.

When there is dissatisfaction or disturbance in the mind, due to lack of self-realization, self -respect is lost. The self-defense mechanism jumps in to preserve the loss of self-respect. Actions are then motivated not by self-esteem , but by negative personality traits such as greed, aggression and ego.

When I can recognize all my good qualities as well as my faults with neutrality, I can start to appreciate myself as I would a friend and experience the comfortable inner glow of self-respect.

With self-respect, it is possible to maintain respect for others. Infringements on the rights of others come about when human beings use ego to guard their selfish interests, and make themselves feel better by dominating others , and suppressing their opinions. With self-respect, one is able to respect the ideas and opinions of others.

Thoughts for reflection: As we mature spiritually, there is less need to have our self-respect bolstered by praise and special attention.

21st Anniversary cake

Lions Club of Kuching City celebrated its 21st anniversary with a party on the 16th October 2009 at Jambu Restaurant to the theme " Colonial White". Response to the theme co lour was overwhelming and the night was full of music and dance, relaxed atmosphere where guests "let their hair down" and simply enjoyed each other's company.
Guest of Honour was District Governor 308A2 Karen Koh. Sister clubs from Jakarta, Penang and Seoul were amongst the guests.

We would like to thank all our other guests especially from Miri and Sibu
who came all the way to celebrate this special occasion with us.

This joint project is between the Lions Club of Kuching City, New Century Lions Club of Kuching Emerald , SMK St Teresa Leo Club and SMK Lodge Leo Club. The boarders at this special school for the deaf were entertained with games and a lantern procession around the compound. New Century Lions also presented them with gifts.

situation and needs

Sekolah Haji Baki, 7th Mile, Bau Road. This school has over 400 students, out of which nearly half of the population are either orphans or come from single parent families. This is a government school but aid for the maintainance of the school is slow and often not enough. Lions Club of Kuching City had been returning to this school for a few years to do various projects such as donation of food to the very poor families for Hari Raya and donation of school uniforms and schools to the poor students.
