Joint cornea transplant project 5th August 2013

Two patients from Bintangor and  Bintulu were given back their sight recently through the joint cornea transplant project (penetrating keratoplastry)  between LC of Kuching City and LC of Kuching North.

The patients are Berasap ak Luyoh (M) 49 years  from Kapit who worked with WTK company in road building. He used to work for Rimunan Hijau in Papua New Guinea where in 1998 he had an infection in his left eye. He came back in 2002 and was treated on and off in Sibu hospital. The infected eye eventually turned blind. Through the cornea transplant , his sight has been restored.

The second  recipient is Surang ak Sigan (M) 69 years old from Bintangor. He was a casual worker until his eyes became bad. He had severe cornea disease for many years and had a cornea transplant to his right eye in 1991 and left eye in 2008. Both eyes were sponsored by  the Lions Club. Up to three years ago, he was well. However  since then he developed dense opacities in both eyes and the corneas became rejected. With the cornea transplant to one of his  eye, he is now mobile again and is extremely grateful to the Lions club for restoring his sight for the third time.

Some members from LC of Kch City visited the patients at the Sarawak General hospital on the 5th August 2013. They also presented a hamper each to the two patients and wish them speedy recovery so that they can return to their respective families. The members who visited the patients were PP Vincent Tan, PP Ivy Fong, PP Dora Lam and Lion Irene Tan who is the project head from the club.
